Galatians 5:24 NKJV And those who are
Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
Galatians 5:24 jvb And those who belong to Christ crucify the
flesh along with the afflictions and the cravings.
Adapted from a forum post: Sorry not to get back
sooner. A series of minor illnesses has kept me inactive. [/] I think we have
had the conversation about bearing ones cross before. No great objection to
resuming. But I think a consideration of several clearer calls to the believer
to sacrifice is more productive.
Romans 6:13 NKJV
And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to
sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your
members as instruments of righteousness to God.
Romans 12:1 NKJV
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you
present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your
reasonable service.
Hebrews 13:15-16 NKJV Therefore by Him let us continually offer the
sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to
His name. - 16 But do not forget to do good and to share,
for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.
Galatians 5:24-25 NKJV And those who are Christ's have crucified the
flesh with its passions and desires. -
25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also
walk in the Spirit.
I prefer afflictions and cravings to passions and
desires in translating Gal 5.24. We usually do not come to Christ nobly giving
up passions and desires. We often come because we are sick and tired of the
afflictions and cravings that accompany bondage to sin.
A part of being begotten again in Christ is being
crucified with Him and dying in Him. After sins and the old spirit are taken
away and the new spirit given, the newly redeemed, now in their Savior, echo
the words of their Lord, "Father, into your hands I commit my
spirit", and receive the benefits of His physical death and His
resurrection.
The "have crucified" is better
translated "crucify". The benefit is greater when the experience is
remembered regularly in thought, word, and deed.
Colossians 1:24 NKJV I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and
fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ, for the sake
of His body, which is the church,
