There is a parallel between the meanderings of current denizens of our universities and those of first century Judaism. The moral confusion of the led is a reflection of the moral confusion of their leaders.
That great prophet of the last century, William F. Buckley, warned us of the cluelessness of American tertiary education in his God and Man at Yale (God and Man at Yale: The Superstitions of 'Academic Freedom': William F. Buckley: 9780895266927: Amazon.com: Books http://amzn.to/1mKwEne ). The "big blog daddies" at PowerLine have provided updates using their alma mater as an example. The latest is included below.
The softening of the penalties for "physical action" in our elite universities over the last half century is reminiscent of the softening of penalties for city leader backwardness during the two centuries of European religious wars (Defenestrations of Prague - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia http://bit.ly/Nc0cu6 ). There was a literal softer landing toward the end of those conflicts. A garbage heap, rather that pikes. We may have some hope from the parallel. Perhaps a new era is at hand.

A collection of Dartmouth students who describe themselves as “Concerned Asian, Black, Latin@, Native, Undocumented, Queer, and Differently-Abled students” have threatened “physical action” if the administrators do not respond to their list of demands. The list of demands is lengthy. Here are some of them:
Incorporate into each department at LEAST one queer studies class.
Commit multi-millions of dollars to increase faculty and staff of color in all departments, and create a “professor of color” lecture series.
Require ALL professors to be trained in “cultural competency” and the “importance of social justice in their day to day work.”
Ask faculty to use preferred gender pronouns. Allow body and gender self-determination.
Provide gender-neutral housing to all students. Provide gender-specific AND gender-neutral bathrooms in EVERY BUILDING on campus.
Provide free legal assistance and financial aid for undocumented students to “better understand each of their unique legal statuses.”
Require that every Dartmouth student be taught and made aware that the land they reside on is Abenaki homeland.
All male-female checkboxes should be replaced with write-in boxes to make forms, surveys, and applications more inclusive for trans, two-spirit, agender, gender-nonconforming and genderqueer folks campus-wide.
The students say that Dartmouth must commit to meeting these demands by March 24, 2014. Otherwise “physical action” will ensue.
I was once part of a group of Dartmouth students that threatened (and engaged in) physical action if the administration did not respond to a demand. The physical action was taking over Parkhurst Hall, the main administration building. The demand was ending ROTC at Dartmouth.
Our demand was probably more pernicious than the entire laundry list presented by the “Concerned Asian, Black, Latin@, Native, Undocumented, Queer, and Differently-Abled students.” But at least it had the virtue of being sane.
The administration’s response to our demand made me secretly proud of Dartmouth even at the time. The College obtained a court injunction against the building-takeover. When we violated the injunction, it gave us time to reconsider (which was never going to happen). Then it called in the national guard to remove us (through physical action).
Having violated the injunction, we were in contempt of court. This meant that our sentence was pretty much at the discretion of the court. It sentenced us to 30 days in jail, just enough time for law abiding Dartmouth students to finish their trimester course work without further interference from our lot.
That course work did not include a queer studies class or instruction that we were all squatting on the Abenaki homeland.
How will the current Dartmouth administration respond to the “physical action,” if any, of the current incarnation of campus rads? We’ll see. My guess is that if the students take over a building, Dartmouth will serve them snacks.
STEVE adds: One thing I have discovered to my dismay during my year here at Colorado is that the gender-extremism is much worse than I imagined it could be.  There is virtually no resistance to it from administrators who probably–or at least should–know better.  It is an iron law of extremists that if they meet no resistance, they’ll keep going.  The average administrator reminds me of the stories of Lyndon Johnson, asking uncomprehendingly about North Vietnam, “What does Ho want?”, not realizing that what Ho wanted was to defeat the United States and conquer the whole of Vietnam.  Johnson kept thinking Ho was like a ward-heeling pol who could be bought off with a few more post offices.  The cravenness of college administrators treat campus extremists the same way.
Instead, Dartmouth and other colleges should follow the example of the University of Chicago back in the 1960s, which simply expelled the first students who conducted sit-ins and other “direct action.”  Problem solved.
UPDATE: I can’t say for certain, but it may be that the story about “physical action” at Dartmouth, first reported on The College Fix, is satire. I certainly hope so.
If the story is satire, it is very cleverly done, and it fooled a number of good bloggers including at NRO, where I first picked up the story. Nonetheless, satire or not, I shouldn’t have written this post without checking more carefully.
SECOND UPDATE: According to the “D” — Dartmouth’s student-run newspaper — more than 200 students and faculty met yesterday to discuss the “physical action” demands. Several students said that they were among the authors of the document. Sadly, then, it looks for now like this was not satire, at least as the word is commonly understood.

Rom 8:1-4 Translation and notes

Rom 8:1-4 KJV  There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.  (2)  For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.  (3)  For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:  (4)  That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Traditional translations obscure the Word

Rom 8:1 jvb  No condemnation now therefore `1 to those in Christ Jesus `2, those thus having `3, as a guide `4 to regular outward behavior `5, not flesh, but spirit `6.  
`1 - The reference is both in general to the prior contents of Romans, and specific to the last four verses of the preceding chapter (Rom 8.22-25).
`2 - Preceding part of the verse is literal word-by-word translation, with the smallest change in word order that makes sense.
`3 - A subset of believers is not in view here. All levels of context make plain that spiritual guidance is a result of God spiritually begetting again through the Son.
`4 - The Greek preposition, best directly translated in this context as "after", indicates the use of its object as a map, not as an automatic pilot.
`5 - This is the metaphorical meaning of "walk" here. Our common use of vehicular transportation has obscured this.
`6 - The Greek definite article with "flesh" and "spirit" is used in a generic sense. In English the article is omitted to show this sense. The Third Person is not in view as a Person. The trinitarianist tradition of assuming the Third Person as a Person is in view wherever possible when "spirit" is read, is wrong here as in the vast majority of cases elsewhere, particularly in this chapter.
Rom 8:2 jvb  For the law `1 of the spirit `2 of that life `3 which is in Christ Jesus hath made me free `4 from the law `1 of sin and death `5.
`1 - In both uses in this verse, "law" indicates a regular consistent operation of causes and effects as in spiritual, natural, or scientific law.
`2 - A spiritual condition is in view. It is the permanent presence of the begotten again new personal spirit and the indwelling Holy Spirit (see Rom 8.16).
`3 - A specific sort of life is in view. It is present because of the specific spiritual condition of those in Christ Jesus.
`4 - Christian and true freedom is in the image of the absolute freedom of God, who is spirit. The begotten again permanent spiritual condition provides true freedom in the image of the Son.
`5 - Sin consistently brings forth death. Spiritual separation from God, then separation from the body, eventually complete and eternal separation from God. As an uninstructed believer, the habits and memories of the old man caused Paul to experience "death" in Rom 7:5-25.
Rom 8:3 jvb  That which was impossible under the Law `1 on the basis of law '2 because of the weakness of flesh '3, God made possible. `4. As He sends `5 his own Son in the likeness of flesh of sin `6, and as an offering `7 concerning sin, He condemns sin in flesh `8.
`1 - The Greek sentence often omits much that we find necessary in English. The Law of Moses is inferred. "That" refers to fulfilling the righteous requirements of the Law. (Rom 8.4; see keeping same in Rom 2.26).
`2 - The general principle of "law" is in view here. The genitive case reflects archaic ablative usage.
`3 - It is flesh, not law, that is weak and powerless, even under conditions of either innocence or justification through faith.
`4 - Main clause is inferred. God makes it possible for the begotten again to walk in pre-ordained good works (Eph 2.10) and on those occasions to fulfill the righteous requirements of the Law.
`5 - Present tense with "as" used for aorist participle. The present participle is somewhat misleading.
`6 - Sin has made flesh mortal. This shows in the deterioration of cells after age 11. This is most visible in the aging of the skin and is the probable reason that Adam and Eve wished to cover the flesh of sin.
`7 - "Offering" is inferred from the usage of the phrase "concerning sin".
`8 - This condemnation empowers the begotten again to crucify the flesh with its afflictions and cravings (Gal 5.24). And thus makes possible good works that fulfill the requirements of the Law.

Lev 23:40-43 Obamaville Booths

That peerless headline writer Matt Drudge attached the label Obamaville to the article copied below. American comments on the article appear to agree. Similar settlements during the Great Depression were known as Hoovervilles. Both presidents assumed office at the beginning of a recession. Hoover six months before the stock market crash of 1929. Our current president six months after the 2008 collapse. Business cycles produce recessions. Government produces depressions. The Federal Reserve is a major culprit in both debacles. But our current president is following the misguided footsteps of his predecessors, Herbert Hoover and Franklin Roosevelt, only more so. The current unrest and revolution elsewhere in the world are reminiscent of the Great Depression era. The American economy was only revived by World War II era spending and destruction of industrial capacity elsewhere. Interesting times ahead.
Israel spent forty years in temporary shelters. God gave them the feast of booths so that they would remember each year that He had delivered them from the Egyptians and had brought them safely to the land of promise. They lived for seven days each year in temporary shelters. And in those seven days they were to rejoice before the Lord.
May the begotten again in Christ Jesus who may be providentially placed in temporary shelters remember past mercies and compassions, and rejoice. And may we all remember the parallel between Israel in the wilderness and the beginnings of the Christians' journey.

While most homes are made from tarps, some more elaborate constructions use milk crates and wooden doors
A sheet of plastic laid over a clothesline. A mini-fortress of milk crates stacked under a tree. A thin mattress on a flimsy crate lying in a dark tunnel.
On the edge of Baltimore's woodlands, dozens of the city's transients live in makeshift homes which they consider safer than homeless shelters.
Photographer Ben Marcin has captured some of the shanties in his thought-provoking photo essay, 'The Camps', documenting the struggle, loneliness and ingenuity of Maryland's people of the woods.

Out of sight: Marcin searched for secluded territories, learning where camps were likely to spring up behind various railroad tracks, Wal-Marts and fast food areas
Rough sleepers: Marcin said some of the homeless people he spoke to preferred to sleep under a bridge than in a shelter which they considered unsafe
Desolate: Marcin's photo series reveals the loneliness of many rough sleepers who chose to carve out their own lives using whatever materials they could get their hands on
Similar to his Last House Standing series which captured lonely rowhouses around the Mid-Atlantic, Marcin shot the shanties around Baltimore without their inhabitants to add to the 'mystery'.
Marcin said he first stumbled upon the homeless dwellings as he hiked through the woods bordering the city during hunting season.
When he saw a 'mini-fortress' made of milk crates just yards from a major thoroughfare, Marcin began searching for other transients 'living off the grid'.
Most were based near railroad tracks, Walmarts, gas stations, and liquor stores.
Representative: The incredibly diverse style of shelters reflect the personal struggles and needs of their owners
Special touches: Despite living on the outskirts of town, shelter owners often tried to make their space homely with greeting mats and flower vases
Inspiration: Marcin was inspired to track down the city's hidden dwellings after stumbling upon this makeshift home made up of stacked milk crates hidden in the bushes just yards from a major thoroughfare near downtown Baltimore
While most of the camps Marcin came across used basic tarps or tents, several were quite elaborate such as this home built entirely of wooden doors
'I have always been interested in the unique places people live in, particularly where there exists an element of defiance or desperation, or both. In these situations, a house can often reflect the dilemma of its owner. In the case of the hobo camps, this reflection is quite pronounced for obvious reasons,' he told The Atlantic Cities.
'A sheet of plastic laid out over a clothesline may be the last stand for somebody who has either been rejected by society or who has refused to conform to whatever rules are being imposed on them.
'Several camp people I talked to said they wouldn't relocate into one of the City's shelters because they were afraid of being assaulted or having belongings stolen.'
The road most traveled: Most of the settlements Marcin photographed were by waterways, railway tracks, Walmarts, gas stations and liquor stores
Mystery: Marcin deliberately didn't photograph camp residents, instead focusing on how they lived, the mark they made and what they left behind
Slums: Marcin came across a number of makeshift settlements or groups of people living off the grid around Baltimore
Marcin said about year after finishing the project, he returned to the woods to find all the camps were gone. One had burned to the ground, some had been bulldozed, while others moved to different locations.
'My guess is that these, too, will not be around for long,' he said.

No options: While several residents told Marcin that living in a tent or sleeping on a mattress in the woods was a personal choice, it seemed to him that there was often no other choice

Gal 5:24 New popart king

N.B. Our traditional translations impute overly noble motives to the elect. The spiritual know that they crucify the flesh in order to avoid the cravings and afflictions of sin in the flesh. But the error of the Galatians is ubiquitous.

The description of the recent work of a popular rap artist brought to mind my translation and interpretation of Gal 5.24. Particularly in the depiction of the cravings and afflictions of the flesh. The emphasized words in the article below illustrate how a great art critic evaluates a great artist in the depiction of the "old man" (Eph 4.22) suffering from "sin in the flesh" (Rom 7.23-24). Even though neither artist nor critic might characterize this in biblical terms. The creature made in the image of the Creator knows the truth of God's power and intolerance of sin (Rom 1.18-20). The creature cannot avoid confessing much of this truth in its present suffering (Rom 8.22).

Lady Gaga never saw it coming. After a relentless, mammoth, publicity extravaganza for her new album, ArtPop, she was upstaged by a comet seeming to swoop in out of nowhere — the release of Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP 2. Eminem’s sales boomed big, while Gaga’s embarrassingly fizzled, leading to quick deep discounts to keep ArtPop on the charts.
Eminem, now 41, did few interviews and personal appearances for this formidable double album. As with Adele sweeping the Grammys two years ago, his instant commercial triumph demonstrates the readiness of a discerning world public to respond to power and passion of voice rather than to manipulative gimmicks or exhibitionistic stunts.
The greatest irony is that Gaga, product of an affluent Manhattan home and a private-school education, had boasted that ArtPop would be the album of the millennium in fusing popular culture with art. She hired Jeff Koons to design the cover, which features a vacuous Koons sculpture of a spread-legged Gaga, backed by a crassly ripped strip of Botticelli’s Birth of Venus. During a London TV interview, Gaga betrayed her limited art knowledge by bizarrely identifying that great Renaissance painting as the Venus de Milo, a notoriously armless late-Greek marble.

But it turned out to be Eminem, a high-school dropout from a squalid trailer-trash past, who has produced the true work of art. I have been arguing for years that the avant-garde is dead, that it ended the moment my hero Andy Warhol cheekily embraced commercial popular culture. But Eminem, with his churning nightmare visions and brutally raw hatreds, has proved that authentic avant-garde shocks are still possible. After a first listen, I wrote to a friend, “This album slaughters all p.c. taboos.
I used to regard white rap - Vanilla Ice, the Beastie Boys - as little more than posturing, crotch-grabbing minstrelsy. ___ Not sure what passage or assemblage of passages you are referring to. As far as I know, His love is never said to be the result of our love or our obedience or our good intentions. It is consistently stated that the reverse is true. It is His special love toward those who are in Christ Jesus on the basis of unmerited favor through the instrument of justifying faith in the Cross and resurrection of our Lord that results in our love toward Him and our walking in pre-ordained good works.

J:- Thanks for correcting me. I should have written "conscience and / or scripture". The universal guilt of man is indicated in Romans 1-3 by an enumeration of all of the sources of knowledge of God, his power and his holiness and his intolerance toward moral evil, that are available to them.
The only "faith" that is of value to God is that which accompanies His giving of righteousness to the begotten again. Individuals may be misled but they are guilty, having obeyed man rather than God. They know better. The power and deity and holiness and intolerance toward evil of the Creator are known to the heart and soul of a creature created in His image. They are without excuse. Unless they obey the Gospel, their foot will slide in due time.

We cheered a week ago, when President Obama used the National Prayer Breakfast to call for release of two Americans.
The first is Kenneth Bae, a prisoner of North Korea. The other is Saeed Abedini, a prisoner of Iran. Each has been sentenced to long prison terms for “crimes” that only a criminal regime would deem criminal: Bae for ministering to Christians and Abedini for work on behalf of house churches.
Alas, the week since Obama’s call confirms a depressing fact about America’s diminished standing in the world these days.
Pyongyang packed Bae off to one of its labor camps in the vast North Korean gulag and cancelled an invitation for an American envoy to visit to discuss Bae’s fate. Meanwhile, Tehran announced it was dispatching several warships to the edge of US waters. Tells you what they think of President Obama’s appeals for release, and his claim that respect for religious liberty is a tenet of his foreign policy.
The hard men in Pyongyang look at the red line Obama drew in Syria and understand he won’t take them on. Ditto for the Iranians, who are using negotiations to buy time before they simply announce they’ve developed their own nukes.
It’s a long way from President Theodore Roosevelt. When a Moroccan bandit named Raisuli kidnapped an American named Ion Perdicaris, Teddy sent a telegram to the sultan: Perdicaris alive or Raisuli dead. Even though Perdicaris’ US citizenship was doubtful, the principle was served.
The world would be a safer place if, instead of feeling free to taunt President Obama, Iran and North Korea had to fear the consequences of defying him.

1st John 4:9-10; Rom 14:17 | Basis of Love and Joy

\1st John 4:9-10 NKJV  In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him.  (10)  In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

It reminded me of a similar instruction from the Apostle (and regent of a hidden kingdom) James:
Jas 1:2-4 NKJV  My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials,  (3)  knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.  (4)  But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.
The passage always encourages me since it is my faith that is being tested and not my behavior.
And since I accepted faith from God on the basis of the need pf eternal life, and not my merits, I believe that it is guaranteed by the shed blood of the Savior, and will withstand all trials.
Governmental leveling does seem to have a record of failure and increase of human suffering however. Perhaps because:

The true equality of human persons has been established in the creation of each in the image of God.
As God is to be loved, so also are neighbors and self to be loved. They are created and sustained in His image. And blessings from Him flow through neighbors and self, even when, like Josepph's brothers, they do not intend them.
Beings created in God's image flourish best in freedom.
Any necessary control by others should be kept at the lowest governmental level possible. Starting with the immediate family, then the extended family, then the neighborhood, then the locality, then the state, then the limited federation, then the interaction of sovereign nations.

Rom 12:1-2 Works vs. Faith

___ Interesting. Two interpretations of rising on wings as eagles in Isaiah 40 demonstrate the difference between works and faith. Many are naturally inclined to think that the eagle beating his wings furiously in order to get airborne is in view. But reason, some knowledge of eagles, context, and faith combine in the realization that the rising toward the heavens through outstretched wings taking advantage of a warm updraft is in view. It is the begotten again spirit of the true believer being raised to heavenly places by the spirit of God that is in view.

Prov 4:23 Guard your heart

Scripture says to think on the good things. I think of the mind as a filter for the heart. Scripture says to "Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life".(Prov 4:23). We are to bring every thought into captivity. Whatever we think on for long enough can filter down into our heart, and a desire for it begin. Which brings to mind the weapons of our warfare.

2 Corinthians 10:4-6 (KJV)  / 4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) 5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; 6 And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.

Man is made up of Spirit, Heart, Will, Mind, living in a Body. The Spirit deals with Strongholds. The Heart deals with imaginations. The Will decides to accept or reject every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God. The Mind is where the thoughts begin. And, don't forget the last verse. God is ready to revenge all disobedience, "when our obedience is fulfilled".

_ God fulfilled the "one heart" promise at the very beginning of the Assembly:

(Acts 4:32 KJV) And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.

_ The "new spirit" of Ezek 11.19 as applied to the begotten again in the Assembly is the spirit of that life which is in Christ Jesus (Rom 8.2). It is a spiritual state permanently established by the begotten again spirit of the believer with the support [N.B. Where it appears "paraclete" is best translated "supporter" or possibly "helper", not "comforter" or "advocate".] of the indwelling Holy Spirit (Rom 8.16).

_ The removal of the "stony heart" and replacement with "a heart of flesh" in Ezek 11.19 is connected with the circumcision of the heart of Deut 30.6. The spiritual replacement surgery separates the crucified flesh of one in Christ Jesus (Gal 5.24) from the new heart of flesh in a good sense. This is prefigured by the removal of twelve stones from the Jordan (Josh 4.8) prior to the physical circumcision of the sons of the twelve tribes in the land of promise (Josh 5.7)

_ The "one heart" of "flesh" that replaces the stony hearts of those begotten again in Christ Jesus is evidently His heart. His flesh, made in the likeness of the flesh of sin (Rom 8.3), yet without sin (Heb 4.15), has been separated through the circumcision of Christ (Col 2.11, see also Heb 10.19-20; 4.12).
