Rom3v23 Sin defined

Rom 3:23 KJV For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
_ An act of sin is evidence that one is in a state of sin.
_ The state of sin is a falling short of the spiritual glory that God intends for a creature made in His image.
Gen 1:26-27 KJV And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. (27) So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
John 4:24 NKJV God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."
_ The biblical meaning of the Greek and Hebrew words for “falling short” is summarized in these statements and verses.
_ The English dictionary (and Bible dictionary) definition of the English word “sin” is much broader.
_ The usefulness in teaching and preaching of a single word for every sort of evil seems to have led to a universal Christian traditional meaning for sin.
_ To properly understand the true biblical meaning of falling short, we must differentiate sin from other evils as the Greek and Hebrew scriptures do.
_ Scripture, particularly Romans, clearly differentiates sin from offense, transgression, trespass, error, etc.
_ (Perhaps translating the Greek and Hebrew words for falling short as “failure” or “failing” would be the best way of avoiding the overly broad and confusing traditional definition of the English word, “sin”.)
_ Avoiding the traditional definition of “sin” is particularly important in resolving some of the difficulties in translating and understanding First Johm.
1Jn 1:9 KJV If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1Jn 2:1-2 KJV My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: (2) And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
1Jn 3:6 KJV Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.
1Jn 3:9 KJV Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
1Jn 5:18 KJV We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.
_ More about the application of the biblical definition of “falling short” to these verses later, Lord willing.
