1st John
1 nkj appp Aa 1 That which was being from the beginning, which we have heard,
which we have seen with our eyes, which we look upon, and our hands handle,
concerning the Word of life. 2 That life is manifested, and we have seen, and
are bearing witness, and are declaring to you that eternal life which was being
with the Father and is manifested to us. 3 That which we have seen and heard we
are declaring to you, that you also might be having fellowship with us; and
truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. 4 And
these things we are writing to you that your joy might be being full.
5 This
is being the message which we have heard from Him and are declaring to you,
that God is being light and in Him is being no darkness at all. 6 Whenever we
say that we are having fellowship with Him, and are walking in darkness, we are
lying and are not practicing the truth. 7 But if we are walking in the light as
He is being in the light, we are having fellowship with one another, and the
blood of Jesus Christ His Son is cleansing us from all sin. 8 Whenever we say
that we are having no sin, we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not
being in us. 9 If we are confessing our sins, He is being faithful and just
since He forgives us our sins and cleanses us from all unrighteousness. 10
Whenever we say that we have not sinned, we are making Him a liar, and His word
is not being in us.
1st John
2 nkj appp Aa 1 My little children, these things I am writing to you, in order
that you sin not. And whenever anyone sins, we are having a Supporter with the
Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 And He Himself is being the covering for
our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.
The
above was modified from the New King James version by modifying just the verb
structure according to 1.0 of Principles of Translation Page at the blog. I have extended the treatment to using "whenever" with the aorist subjunctive and translating some subjunctives as indicative for clarity. I
also changed Advocate to Supporter and propitiation to covering because I
believe both changes much improve understanding.
It may
be easier to judge just the one set of changes without the additional changes
made earlier in James. Having a familiar text changed to something completely
unfamiliar is disorienting. And it certainly is easier for me to produce. (One
could write a simple program to do it if appropriate data bases and software
tools were available.)
The
aorist tense and its impact on other tenses seem to be unique in Greek. When
translated on the basis suggested by Knock, the distinction between the river
of time and the timeless is plainly seen. One can easily affirm that
Providence gave man that language so that the Good News of eternal life and resurrection
could be written in it.
