The
Eighth Day of Christmas is the anniversary of the circumcision of the Christ
child (It is also known as New Year's Day.
The rite
of circumcision - Gen 17.10,13,14 - on
the eighth day after birth - Gen 17.12 -
was established in a covenant with Abraham - Gen 17.1-2 -.
Abraham
is the father of all those that through faith - Rom 4.16 - receive the blessing of the
imputation of righteousness without works - Rom 4.5-6 -, those whose iniquities
are forgiven and whose sins are covered - Rom 4.7-8 -.
Abraham
received a new name on the day of his circumcision - Gen 17.5,26,24 -.
Interestingly Ishmael did not receive a new name - Gen 17.25 -.
Both
John the Baptist and Jesus officially received the names given earlier by
angels on the eighth day after their births when they were circumcised. The
first son of David and Bathsheba never received a name. He died on the seventh
day of his short life.
