Gen. 14.18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
This meal was a precursor or type of the supper of remembrance that has been celebrated by many for nearly two millenia.
Luk. 22.19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. 20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
There is much that these two meals have in common, but there is also one difference that is of interest.
Psa. 76.1 In Judah is God known: his name is great in Israel. 2 In Salem also is his tabernacle, and his dwelling place in Zion. 3 There brake he the arrows of the bow, the shield, and the sword, and the battle. Selah.
God's tabernacle or tent is Salem, which means peace, and after the battle of the kings Abraham is the guest of the King of Peace, the priest of the Most High God. And Abraham, in a figure, was sheltered by the tent of God's peace.
Heb. 11.9 By faith he [[Abraham]] sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: 10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
But those who worship in spirit and in truth at the present Supper of Remembrance have come to God's permanent dwelling place, God's city, the city sought by Abraham, the father of them that have faith.
Heb. 12.22 But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, 23 To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, 24 And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.
